Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome

Oct 29, 2019 | Exercise

As we come into the warmer months everyone is starting to get outdoors and exercise more. This increase in activity can bring injuries and pain! Recently we have seen an increased number of knee problems with the most common one being PATELLOFEMORAL PAIN SYNDROME!

What is patellofemoral pain syndrome?

Patellofemoral pain syndrome is when pain is felt at the front of your knee or felt behind your knee cap. It may also be referred to as runners knee or chondromalacia patellae. It is the most common cause of anterior knee pain and can effect one or both knees.

What causes it?

There are multiple factors that can cause you to experience patellofemoral pain. The pain experienced is often due to poor bio-mechanics around your knee which results in poor gliding of your kneecap when your knee moves. Although causes vary from person to person the most common causes are poor mechanics and often the result of muscle tightness and weakness around your hip and knee and poor foot position.
Women are more likely to experience it due to the difference in biomechanics between men and women.

What are the symptoms?

The main symptoms are:

  • Pain felt at the front of your knee

  • Pain under or around your kneecap.

  • The pain can be sharp or dull and aching.

  • Walking, running, climbing stairs, squatting or simply bending and straightening your knee can all cause pain.
